One of the most distinctive and recognizable features of Sergiev Posad matreshka painting style is the device called “pestreshka” when flowers and other details are made with a “dig” – a special stick wrapped in cotton wool. Using this device craftsmen managed to get even circles that were united in bunches of flowers, made ornament or reminded of spotted pattern. For each color there was its own dig.
